How many links do I need for rankea? The eternal question that Renzo solves for us.

One of the most common questions we SEOs receive is: “How many links do I need to rank my page?” And although it seems simple, the answer does not have a single or universal number. Google uses more than 200 ranking factors, and among them, inbound links (backlinks) are still one of the most important. But it's not about quantity, but about quality, relevance and authority.

Here's what you should take with you as an apprenticeship: There is no exact formula that says “you need X links to rank”. What is clear is that without quality backlinks, there will be no sustainable positioning.

Understanding the Role of Backlinks

Backlinks are like votes of confidence that other websites give to yours. The more quality links point to your content, the greater the likelihood that Google will consider your page relevant and authoritative.

But that doesn't mean that with a thousand low-quality links you're going to outperform a page with just 10 high-value links.

I invite you to read this article ➡️ What are links.

There is no magic number

There's no specific link threshold that guarantees you'll appear on the first page of Google. This depends on:

  • Keyword competition: The more competitive the search term, the more work you'll have.
  • Domain Authority: A site with high domain authority may rank with fewer links than a new one or one with little authority.
  • Content quality: If your content doesn't meet the search intent, not a hundred links will save you.
  • Internal structure of the site: Good web architecture and On Page optimization are very influential.

How do you know how many links you need?

Here's a practical tip based on years of experience ⬇️

Analyze your direct competitors 🕵️.

Use tools like Ahrefs, SEMrush or MAKE IT TOOL, and check how many backlinks the pages that are already ranking in the top positions for your target keyword have. Then, focus not only on matching that quantity, but on exceeding it in quality.

For example:

If the page that is in position #3 has 200 backlinks from domains with DA 30+, you should aim for 150 to 200 links from domains with DA 40+. In our article on How to create links for my website, I explain what this DA is.

Fewer links, but better quality = better results.

Focus on quality, not quantity

A single link from an authoritative site is worth hundreds of directory links or automated comments.

Avoid the temptation to buy bundles of thousands of cheap links. Not only does that not work, but it can end up penalizing your site.

In this article, I'll show you how to research the links your website receives: How to check backlinks in Google Search Console

Instead of chasing numbers, focus on building an intelligent, ethical, and long-term oriented link building strategy. Analyze your competition, improve what already works and always prioritize quality above all else.

If you want to scale quickly, invest time in relationships with influencers, media and communities in your industry. Link building was never a race of speed, but of endurance.
